When someone spends their life mired in low expectations, the likelihood of them achieving any form of objective success drops to nearly zero. This is the case with addicts, ex-convicts, and those living in poverty. The problem is also two-fold. Not only do these individuals have to learn to elevate the expectations they have for themselves, but they’re also tasked with overcoming the low expectations assigned by those around them. The assumptions made about people with bad teeth are instant, devastating, and long-lasting. Studies have found that individuals with visible teeth problems are presumed to be uneducated, poor, lazy, unintelligent, violent, untrustworthy, and less friendly than someone with a visibly attractive smile. Data shows that overcoming these low expectations (whether internal or external) is critical to self improvement.

While low expectations can contribute to failure, high expectations often drive success. We all know the inspirational tales of a coach holding his players to the highest standards and in return, seeing improvement in work ethic, morale, fundamental skills and overall performance. These underdog tales collectively inspire us, because achieving success not just on raw talent but on grit, determination, and a positive mental attitude is part of the American Dream! When we provide underprivileged groups access to the same cosmetically impressive smiles that were previously available only to the elite, we also remove the artificial limits they (and those around them) have placed in their way. Suddenly, they become the more reliable employee, the more desirable partner, the more qualified candidate - both in the eyes of those making the decisions, and in their own mind.
